AIMS Project - Discover Goa - Phathepur

Introduction

4 Km away from the Titan Industrial estate, is the Phatepur village from Nuvem Panchayat which is in Salcette Block. The village belongs primarily to the ST Catholic Gaudi Community. With a population of 350 individuals belonging to 70 households. The village being in the interiors have limited public transport which are at fixed time and are absent on Bank holidays. The primary occupation of the village is agriculture. However as most of the villagers are mundkars (tenants) the villagers have very small land holdings (approx 200sq mts). Thus limiting the scope to plantation of vegetables. The villagers hence seek employment in others farm either as daily wage labours or lease other peoples fields in the monsoon.

Strength of the Village

Women in the Village are very hard working.
Women have been involved in agriculture since generation hence the villagers are more comfortable with agriculture projects.
The land is very fertile and there is plenty of water supply.

Weakness of the Village

In the midst of the strength the village also has its weaknesses:

While Men are unemployed and are addicted to alcohol and gamling, women are the major bread winners.
The land size is not only very small, the lands are in the name of their owners. This limits their capacity to invest in the land for like drip farming, poly house , well etc.

Lifestyle of the Village

Intervention

Based on the potential of the villagers AIMS carried out the following out reach activity:

Formed 3 Self Help Groups.
Formed 1 Farmers Club
Formed 6 Joint Liability Groups.

Workshops conducted

AIMS conducted capacity building programs with the assistance of various organisation like NABARD , MSME, Agnel Ashram.
Formed 1 Farmers Club
The Phatepur farmers club was taken on a study tour to Dhappolli and Vengurla.
They were given training on Biotechnology i.e. Mushroom Cultivation. Grafting and Vermi Compost.
They were given training in shell work and handicraft like flower making, embroidery and garment manufacturing.
Workshop was conducted with the help of former ICAR scientist Dr. Faleiro on the problems faced by the farmers.

Success Stories

The 6 JLG groups were credit linked to the Indian overseas bank to the loan amount of Rs. 2lakhs 50thousand per JLG group.
The village today has 3 business units a mushroom unit, a piggery farm, Organic vegetation, floriculture, horticulture (Bananas) and a nursery.
The group has participated in three exhibitions in Goa and one exhibition in Delhi.
In the last one year the 6 JLGs have cleared 1,30,000/- of their loan amount, without defaulting for a month.
The farmers club has been appointed as vendors for organic local vegetables by a Singapore based five star hotel “ A Leela Diwa” in Betalbatim.
